Next : Prometheus: The “Ancient Astronaut” Theory in Film
Director Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated film Prometheus – released in early June – tells the story of human beings genetically engineered by extraterrestrial visitors.Scott admits he was inspired by the writings of Swiss author Erich von Daniken. “NASA and the Vatican agree that it is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way... That’s what we’re looking at (in the film), at some of Erich von Daniken’s ideas of how did we humans come about,” Scott told Hollywood Reporter.Von Daniken is known for books like the best selling Chariots of the Gods? and Gods From Outer Space, which deliver his “Ancient Astronaut” theory – the idea extraterrestrials were in contact with ancient civilisations, and may perhaps be responsible for starting civilisation on Earth. Von Daniken frequently appears on the popular History Channel program Ancient Aliens.In an interview for Empire magazine, Ridley Scott ‘outs’ himself as a proponent of the Ancient Astronaut theory. When asked if he personally believes Earth has been visited by extraterrestrials in its ancient past, Scott replied: “I think it’s entirely logical. The idea that we’ve been here three billion years and nothing happened until 75,000 years ago is absolute nonsense. If something happened here two billion years ago, if there was a civilisation at least equal to ours, there would be nothing left after two billion years. It would be carbon. We talk about Atlantis and cities under water that have long gone, long submerged, but they’re in the relatively recent past. I’m talking about one-and-a-half-billion years ago – was this planet really empty? I don’t think so.”
The popular theories of the late Zecharia Sitchin may have also inspired the plot for Prometheus. Sitchin’s books have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 25 languages.Sitchin attributed the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Anunnaki, which he states was a race of extraterrestrials from a planet beyond Neptune called Nibiru. He believed this hypothetical planet of Nibiru to be in an elongated, elliptical 3,600 year orbit in the Earth’s own Solar System, asserting that Sumerian mythology reflects this view. Fascinatingly, Sitchin calculated that Nibiru was due to make another pass by the Sun and Earth any year now.Respected mainstream scientists
have also spoken on the subject. Francis Crick, the molecular biologist who discovered DNA also believed life on planet Earth was seeded by advanced life forms. His ‘Directed Panspermia’ theory suggests life may be distributed by advanced extraterrestrial civilisations. Crick argued that DNA encapsulated within small grains could be fired in all directions by such civilisations in order to spread life within the universe.In 2010 British physicist Stephen Hawking said intelligent alien life forms almost certainly exist – but warned that communicating with them could be “too risky.”
“We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet,” Hawking said. “I imagine they might exist in massive ships... having used up
all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”In Prometheus, there is yet another pointer to non-mainstream research – this time in the field of UFOs. In a pre-release featurette, director Ridley Scott says: “The planet where they go is called Zeta(2) Reticuli, and what they find there is an establishment that is not what they expected it to be.” Zeta Reticuli is a binary star system in the constellation of Reticulum located approximately 39 light-years from Earth. Most UFO buffs know Zeta Reticuli is thought to be the home system of the so-called “Grey” aliens – an idea that has its roots in the 1961 Hill abduction incident in which Betty and Barney Hill were allegedly taken aboard an extraterrestrial spacecraft in rural New Hampshire and subjected to medical tests. Zeta Reticuli is also cited as the home of the Greys in connection with Project Serpo and by Area 51 “whistleblower” Bob Lazar.“What if you could meet God but God turned out to be the Devil?” – Michael Ellenberg, Prometheus executive producer On the conspiracy angle, the investigative journalist and radio talk show host Alex Jones says Prometheus is “more than just a film.” In fact, it is “a revelation” of the Illuminati’s plans to manipulate humanity’s evolutionary process through
genetic engineering.
“The secret is that the elite believe they are attaining godhood and are destined for the stars. Their ancient and occultic views are reflected in the dark themes of Prometheus, the very name of which hints at the quest for eternity and power among a group who think a divine right bestowed by a higher intelligence gives credence to their meddling with the affairs of common man.” Hollywood has long been used as a conduit for elite propaganda, but in this case Jones doesn’t indicate whether he thinks Ridley Scott and members of his creative team are consciously blowing the whistle – or the willing tools of the Illuminati.
A good science fiction story blurs the line between fiction and reality. In Prometheus, the story may be uncomfortably closer to reality than most of us realise.
